Monochrome Collage - North American Indian Style

Well at last I have finished my collage.
Well actually I slipped with the craft knife and now I have 2 collages!

I chose this colour as the stone Turquoise is used a lot in North American Indian jewellery.

It is hard to see but the background is coloured with inks and stamped. The background is also brushed with Pearl Ex powders hence the shine.

Different papers were pasted over the background and then stamped with pictures of cave art.

I actually (health issues aside) found this a real challenge. I love this colour but the temptation to add pink and purple was very hard to fight.

For the latest challenge I've done a digital collage. Concentrating on texture and patterns - bricks, wood, trellis, plants - I layered and altered various photos of my yard (my theme). I was a little unsure as to whether a digital work would be acceptable but it's a media that I've been experimenting with more recently, and one I feel happy with. Plus there are parts of this that just wouldn't work with a conventional 'paper' approach.

These are my ATC's based on North American Indian inspiration.

I chose the colours to represent a desert sunset and painted with watercolours on watercolour paper.
I stamped the backgrounds using the stamps I made for an earlier challenge.

The first shows an Anasazi pot, the second an Indian in all his glory. The third is a little big for an ATC I know but I wanted to include the concho I made for the last challenge.

Well at long last here are my results of challenges 4 and 5.

This is the polystyrene stamps that I made based on the Anasazi pots that I drew for challenge 3.

The following are the stamps printed to paper and to fabric. I made small and large stamps.

I have used these fabrics in a couple of mini quilts and they look good I'm happy to say ;0)

For Challenge 5 I made a concho from air drying clay.
It is based on a concho from an North American Indian war bonnet.

well here is my clay challenge finished at last. As it was so thick it took an age to dry through but I got there in the end, its a sort of mish mash of different 1940's cameras, as you always need your camera when traveling! Good job its so small or I would mistake it for my real camera ! Yeah right, I think I will draw a line under clay models for good ! Although I did have fun with it !!

Finally I'm posting this. I won't go into the full details of why I'm so late - suffice to say it involves losing the damn thing, trying something new that didn't work and wasting lots of time doing other stuff!

Ah well - not sure if I'm finished with this, but after my struggles I don't know if I want to satin varnish it or if that would even bloody well stay on. Anyone else have problems with air dry clay delaminating itself?

Challenge #5 - Kim

Itzamna

For this challenge I decided to create my own interpretation of the Maya God Itzamna - the Lord of the Heavens, of Night and of Day. He was the founder of the Mayan culture and his attributes includes having a big nose and snakes. I gave him a head of beaded snakes and good sized nose. In dressing him I used fabric I created in Challenge #4.

To create his head I wrapped polymer clay around a ball of aluminum. Inside the aluminum ball was a loop of wire that I had attached eight "hairpins" of wire. Making sure that these pins were evenly spaced coming out of the aluminum ball was a little tedious but it created the look I wanted. Before I baked the head, I added orange and red curls and pressed some seed beads into the clay. After baking the clay I strung the seed beads onto the wires and colored his face.

I've had this polymer clay in a craft drawer for easily a dozen years. I was really surprised that it was still good. I guess stuff like that can last forever!

Challenge 5

Clay has never, ever been a successful medium for me. In school my attempts to create anything reasonable with clay were always disastrous.

Age has not improved my sculpturing techniques. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that my efforts with clay have worsened over the years!

So this challenge was one I dreaded. I could have gone with a flattish object, like a leaf. But, being me, I wanted to try something different.

My attempt at making a clay model of my conifer in a pot has confirmed that I will never make it as a sculptor. Not that it wasn't fun - I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks as I tried in vain to manipulate the clay into a better shape.

The photos are of the pot in progress, and the final painted version, albeit a poor stab at trying to show the grasses etc that grow around the base. Time to move on to the next challenge asap, methinks!!!

This it what I have come up with for challenge 4 .I made a stamp out of the pizza base of the logo of Imperial Airways and then stamped it 4 times using paint on a painted blue background. I then printed out the banner ( I did intend to cut those out of the pizza base as well but thought I would have trouble getting a clean stright edge with such small letters ) The inspiration for the piece was an Imperial Airways luggage tag.

I was amazed with the quality of the print you get from the pizza base and I am sure I will use this technique again.

I drew a daisy in my piece of pizza polystyrene with a pencil and blanked out unwanted areas using the rounded end of the pencil. I made a few prints using stamp pads and then used three shades of blue acrylic paint, watered down, to paint the stamp. Some of the previous crimson ink had not washed off so that has blended in too.

Ch 4 - poly ivy!

For challenge 4 I decided to focus on the ivy in my back yard. I've used a few techniques here. For the base (the brick wall) I printed off a photo of the wall and using gel medium I transferred the image to one of the polystyrene pizza bases that I had. With the 2nd tray, I cut out one ivy shape using a black & white print of a leaf which I then glued to the poly 'leaf'. The remaining ivy 'leaves' were cut out around real leaves that I took from my yard. After trial and error, I decided that one of the best ways to colour them was using brush, or artist, pens, although I also painted each 'leaf' with acrylic paints. Using a craft knife I worked veins and whiter patches onto the 'leaves' to more resemble the originals. Before assembling, I stenciled 3 or 4 leaf shapes from the cut out shapes onto the 'wall' with acrylic paints.

This is the first time that I've ever used polystyrene in art, and my first attempt at a 3D collage. Great fun, even though I cheated slightly and used 2 pizza trays ;> An interesting challenge that has whetted my appetite to try similar techniques. Also, focusing on the ivy itself has made me realise what wonderful shapes and textures these leaves have. I think that I'll be using ivy in future challenges, as I want to explore this plant further.

I made a quick a quick stamp on a piece of polystyrene - about three inches in diameter. The zodiac symbols are a little over-sized and crowded around the sun motif in the center. I simply "punched" the polystyrene with the tip of a pencil. I made a couple of prints on paper and on a couple of fabric scraps (pictured here.)

It was fast and fun. Why did I wait so long?

Thanks to Claire for her brilliant prints which have given me a starting point and I am delighted with the results!

I made myself a "plate" on which I "etched" my bowl designs and inked with ordinary stamping ink and pressed firmly into my sketchbook. I now have loads of ideas I want to try out: printers ink, patterns on the bowls, over-printing, like Claire says, and making simple stamps by cutting shapes out and remounting onto card or something.

Challenge 4 Polystyrene Tray

My inspiration totally deserted me for challenge 3, sorry!

So moving swiftly onto challenge 4. Polystyrene pizza trays are great for making very simple printing plates.

I used a "dead" cheap bic type biro andthe end of a pencil to indent my pattern into the first block, I then used acrylic paint to print onto the second block which I etched in the same way. Using this method its unusual to be able to get fine detail, and mistakes are hard to fix. You can use a soldering iron or stencil cutter, I wouldn't recommend this unless you use a respirator.

Making some holiday cards has been on my "to do" list for several years. It took this challenge for me to get my act together and make it happen! During the month of November I drew everyday as part of DrawMo! I joined that month long challenge (to be held every November) after getting inspired by Challenge #2. I still think of myself as "capable of pulling together a pretty competent doodle" but with some more experience I might actually edge towards...

Anyways, after finishing the West of the Moon drawing I resized it in photoshop and sent it off to the printer. I now have 25 cards , the inside reads "Happy Holidays" and down at the bottom in a small font "2007 - Bring it on!"

This is my challenge 3 project. I made a holiday card using the theme animals, penguins and polor bears for this one. The card was made digitally modified with PhotoShop Elements 3 using copyright free images. In researching for this I found the common habitat of polar bears is North pole that of penguins South pole, thus north to south. The card format was taken from book artist Robert Lavadour at Missioncreekpress.com.

I like the left-handed version of the panther better. Just my personal taste. Panther was sketched from photo on the front of an old Florida phone book, bird from photo in National Geographic, and Buddy from personal photo. S

For this challenge, I considered decorating the almond tree in my yard with xmas baubles but decided that may take too long! In the end, I went for a collage.

The main photo is of my yard (my theme) last winter. The background is an effect that I used on a photo of brickwork; Love and Peace are black and white photos of the 2 stones that sit at the base of my almond tree (in the main photo covered in snow so invisible!); and the fairy is an altered photo of the small statuette, also in my yard. I used silver pen to add snow, although not all the highlights on the photos show up in the scan. The scan doesn't show the 3D aspect of the collage either - all the images are raised using various thicknesses of foam pads.

Fun to do, and I beat the deadline ;>

For this challenge, I went for the easy option and made some Christmas cards featuring trees. The first one is much more winter themed than Christmas. I really like it with the blue and silver - it's got an icy feel to it. The second one is far more traditional in reds and greens. I often use trees on my Christmas cards, as they are a symbol that can be relevant across so many cultures at this time of year.

I have had such fun with this challenge ! My theme being "The golden age of travel " fitted quite nicely with the most famous form of travel in the world, Santa's Sleigh. Although it didn't quite fit in with the time scale 1920-1940 and it must be impossible to buy a ticket but I had great fun with my stamps and papers, paints and off course just a touch of glitter !!

Challenge #2

I had a lovely weekend 10 days ago now at Missenden Abbey about 20 minutes from where I live.

The weekend is titled "Advanced Textiles and Embroidery" and intended for people who have been through City and Guilds who want to develop their work further. The weekend has a core of regular participants- I've been going for close to 5 years now, and people who come on a more infrequent basis. The tutor is Hilary Bower, who doesn't teach, she mentors the group giving lots of one to one advice and support over the weekend. The other benefit is the wonderful group of people who all encourage and support each other with advice, materials and new ways of doing things.

I spent my weekend drawing this rather beautiful seedpod as part of my CJ. I drew everything from small sections to groups of patterns that I saw in it, and the above section. This is the conclusion of this challenge, but not the pencil drawing.

Finally, I have remembered to upload the drawing! This is 1000 year old Pictish Stone fairly close to where I live. kari might recognise this. During the winter it is covered by a protective box so won't be visible again until spring.

Here is another of a local scene where I struggled with all the perspectives. This is os out of my comfort zone but turned out better than I feared.

Drawing free hand is not something I do very often or well, I can't get my eye coordinated with my hand.
I say freehand as I used to do technical drawing when I was at school and found that easier. So you can understand why I was drawn (no pun intended) to the patterns on these pots made by the Anasazi Indians.

The original pots are grey and black so they worked well in the pencil.
I love the shapes of the pots, the patterns on them and the way the tones of black and grey create the textures.

My Dad arrived while I was drawing this. He is a beautiful artist. Your drawing is improving he said. My head is now very big!!!

This is my drawing of a fairy. I'm really pleased with it, I hadn't thought that I could do it. The funny thing is that I only managed to draw something I'm really happy with when I thought oh, whatever I come up with this time I call it finished. Practise and a relaxed attitude seemed to be the trick for me.

Well this was my first proper drawing since school, so it was quite a challenge. Although I must say I did quite enjoy it, much to my suprise.Not something I would of chosen to draw, a Cadillac but it seemed the best to try first time as it has lots of stright lines. So here it is, I think I will try something with curvy lines next !!

For my own sake I need to make a proper start on this project, otherwise I'm not going to do anything at all and I'll regret wasting time flitting from one idea to the next. I'm due to go for a weekend at Missenden Abbey in just over a week, the weekend is called Advanced Textiles, its about developing work beyond City and Guilds. I ususally spend my time on design development, and I can't face saying to my mentor (Hilary Bower) that I've done nothing since June.

I'm going for simple, using the collection of seed heads I have around me. Taking advantage of the season to get out and about with my camera, have a good walk with my dog and hopefully pick up a few bits and pieces while I'm out. I did make it down the garden earlier- I picked a few "keys" from my Acer, so I'm all set to start!

Over the last few months I've been drawing on a fairly regular basis in an effort to improve my drawing skills and tackle subjects that I would have previously ignored completely. So this challenge wasn't as difficult for me as for some of the others in the group.

However, I've been drawing with pen, not pencil, using cross-hatching etc to show tone and shadow. Also I am not, and have never been, good at complex subjects, perspective and proportions. So for this challenge I decided to push myself. After a suggestion from someone on the group (thank you!) I chose to draw my theme, my back yard, from an upstairs window. This is the result. The tones are fairly accurate, but some of the proportions are still not right, despite my attempts to correct them. However, overall I'm pleased with the drawing and enjoyed working in HB pencil - may do more :)

Backyard Sun Ornament

Here's my Challenge 2 drawing. A view out my dining room of a sun ornament that hangs on the fence. The blueberry bush in front of the fence is brusting with red leaves - when the afternoon sun hits it, it looks as though it is on fire. In the foreground is a stand of Siberian Irises, the blooms gone since August, the leaves are turning yellow. My husbands was going to chop the leaves down I had him wait till after I finished this drawing. I used an HB pencil (frustrating given all the rich color I was looking at) and found it difficult to get dark values. It took some time to get started on this challenge, blank white paper can be quite intimidating, but I'm satisfied with the results (it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!)

I did these drawings last night and I was sorely tempted to add colour - but I was good LOL. I used Egon Schiele as my inspiration. I thought I'd do two drawings one using my right (dominant) hand and the other with my left hand. It really amazes me that such different images appear and much softer and quite uncontrolled with the left hand. Which do you prefer?

This was a tough challenge for me but here you go. My attempt at drawing bluejays. My theme is "Autumn" and we had a lot of bluejays in the yard this Fall so I chose them as my subject. The one on the right looks more like a woodpecker, though ;-) My scanner absolutely would not pick up the pencil so I had to take a photo.

I want to make a hand-carved stamp with a simplified hand holding a bowl symbol, so I decided to see what a more realistic version would look like first.

It is impossible to hold a bowl in front of the mirror and sketch effectively, so I had to work from memory/imagination and am amazed I managed it!

This started with pencil, then ink and now coloured pencils. I have done it in Linda's Drawing AB along with another drawing.

So, I have achieved two goals tonight and feel sooo good about that!

Pencil Drawing

This is my first batch of pencil drawings! This morning I had to go to a nearby town (on a fruitless quest for a costume for a show I'm in!) and there's a disused cemetery there that I've been meaning to visit for ages. So, as I was going anyway I grabbed a sketchbook, pencil and camera and headed off with glee! It's real haven, this cemetery, it's managed by a local group (as a pocket park) who are gradually working on it, putting in benches, clearing up etc. There's loads of established trees including several big hollies with berries and lots of squirrels too. As I stood sketching something up in the tree above was cracking and fidgetting about and a shower of nut shells came raining down! LOL Anyway, I'm rambling! I really enjoyed the drawing much more than I thought I would! I tried extra hard not to judge what I was doing, just to get on and do it!

This pencil sketch did not photograph too well. I sketched rather lightly since this drawing is going to be my map for adding watercolor.

I have been taking a lot of photos lately. I find that they help me to fine tune my composition and sketching skills. For me sketching is so difficult if I'm trying to create something from memory. So until my mind's eye becomes more talented in recalling detail, I will relay on my photos.

Not sure why, but these subjects fascinate me most. I´m sure, other interesting themes will come up while I am trying to learn more about him. So maybe this map will grow during the project.

Celestial Bodies

I had a lot of fun creating this mind-map for my theme. The actual words came easy. Once I let go of my left-brain skepticism and started to feel more comfortable with the flow and interconnection, I began to appreciate the value of creating and using mind-maps as a tool. I put this map in the beginning of a journal that I plan to use as a sketchbook for this journey. Next... I need to figure out what a mood board is!?!

Although I am beginning to feel more comfortable with the Yahoo pages, Blogger feels like home! I hope to spent some time this weekend getting current with what everyone is working on, checking out blogs/flickr, and database info. This is actually my second mindmap - the first I did was Themes as I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to do. Predictably enough, for those that know me, this theme is the one that grabbed me - as I say, no suprises there. "Woman" has been my inspiration both creatively and spiritually for so long now that it would be a shame to waste this opportunity to explore an aspect or aspects in depth. I started to do that before when doing a foundation art course but I didn't have the time to go as far as perhaps I could - here I feel I have that opportunity. So, "Woman" it is - I think I will break it down even further. My first instinct was to go with Yoni and I think another mindmap is in order - essence of woman perhaps ;).

I really enjoyed doing this mind map, I had forgotten how usefull they were, but I used them when they were called spider maps or brain storming !! I think I have a lot to choose from now I hve brought my era froward by 100 years !!

What a great exercise! My first Map was so gigantic I had to narrow it down. I'll still narrow this one down to a manageable scope....while adding some fun stuff from the first one. Oh...wait...that won't work. Well, at least I won't run out of ideas!

I picked North American Indians and had in mind the Rock Art of the Anasazi.

I still think that will be the main focus of my work as these petroglyphs have facanated me for decades, but I found it interesting to see how many different things I was interested in to do with these people.

I am sure that there is much more than I have thought of here.
One thing is certain, I will NOT be short of something to think about.

After much consideration of many themes, including gardens, castles, water and stone, I decided to narrow down the garden theme and concentrate on one - my back yard.

Close to hand, it means that I can observe changes through the seasons, as well as explore a variety of subjects, including individual plants, general views, structures and the creatures who dwell in, and visit, my yard.

Having done the mind map, I'm convinced that this theme is right for me and am looking forward to collecting images and other ideas on my inspiration board (once I get one!).

I had a bit of a rethink of my theme last night. I decided to try and make the challenge work to best effect for me and to make best use of time available, I needed a theme that I could access easily every day of the week.

Now I've completed my mind map, there are a number of possible areas for exploration in there, and by visiting the river at different times of day through the year I can get even more out of this theme. After I posted this I spotted I'd missed wharves, warehouses and bridges off my map!!

Well, I've given it some thought and I think I've decided on my theme. I have an obsession with cemeteries, their architecture, headstones, wildlife et al and I've got a project that I want to use this theme for but want to do lots more exploration and experimentation on it. So that's what I've settled on. What's everyone else chosen?

Having majour internet problems here - raining in Combe Martin so the whole village must be on line!!! But, I think I have made it in.

So excited about this. I am going to be working on American Indian rock art and petroglyphs - a big love of mine that I want to explore further.

This sounds like a fantastic idea - it is good to keep with one subject and explore it thoroughly.

Once we have settled on our object/subject, perhaps we can also start up a work-cum-sketchbook dedicated to it as well - what do you think? That can be filled with research (photos, writings, articles, other artists who explore the subject, drawings, colour swatches, fabrics, ideas etc).

My subject is going to be a follow on and continuation of, my recent "Sacred Bowls" explorations. I am certain I will benefit from more in depth investigation inot the concept.
